Who says cookies are just for humans? Make a baked holiday treat for your fine furry friends this holiday season to let them know just how much you love them. My daughter and I made these Pumpkin Dog Treats for all the doggies in our building. While I can say that they are bland for those of us who walk on two legs, they are a yummy and healthy treat for the four legged breeds.

Make them using a dog bone cookie cutter, as we did (they are hard to find in stores in NYC – we searched just about every pet store in Manhattan and several baking stores without success – apparently not many people make their own dog treats – so we ended up ordering ours online from Amazon). You can also use holiday theme cookie cutters to make these doggie treats.

Wrap the pumpkin dog treats in cello bags and print cute labels with doggie paw prints so there is no mistaking who the cookies are made for. We chose the orange and black colors because of the pumpkin flavor. A free downloadable PDF printable of these Pumpkin Dog Treats Labels is available by clicking on the hotlink.  You will need to use Avery Print-to-the-Edge Arched Labels for this template (Avery Template 22809).

Homemade Pumpkin Dog Treats

Prep Time: 20 minutes

Cook Time: 40 minutes

Total Time: 60 minutes

Yield: About 30 medium cookies

Serving Size: 1 cookie

Make a homemade treat for your favorite four legged friend. Brown rice and pumpkin are both easy for dogs to digest.

Ingredients

  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 cup canned pumpkin
  • 1/4 teaspoon sea salt
  • 2 1/2 cups brown rice flour
  • 1 teaspoon dried parsley (optional)
  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Whisk eggs and pumpkin in large bowl until smooth. Stir in salt and dried parsley (if using). Add brown rice flour about a half cup at a time, combining with spatula or hands to form a stiff, dry dough.
  • Turn dough out onto lightly floured surface (dust with brown rice flour). Briefly knead and press to combine. If dough is crumbly rub with a small amount of water and continue to knead until dough is stiff and smooth. Roll out down to about 1/2" thick. Using a dog bone or other cookie cutter cut shapes out of dough, gathering and re-rolling scraps to use the dough up.
  • Place cutouts on ungreased cookie sheet. Press dots down center of dog bones using a fork (optional). Bake 20 minutes, then remove from oven and carefully turn over to cook other side. Bake an additional 20 minutes. Allow to cool completely on baking rack. Package for gift giving or store in an air-tight container.
